Description

From small parcels of 60-year-old vines, the Protos Gran Reserva 2015 spends 24 months in 80% French and 20% American oak barrels, as well as 36 months in bottle before release. A dark cherry colour with garnet rim, the nose is expressive and complex with aromas of jam, cocoa, tobacco, toffee and hints of smoke. The palate is elegant and silky with round tannins and a deliciously long finish.

With a history dating back almost 100 years, the mission of Bodegas Protos has always been to listen to and understand the terroir. For the last 10 years, Protos has been studying every plot of land it owns, observing how Tempranillo clones adapt and change in each location to gain a deeper understanding of the vine, and ultimately craft the best expression of each terroir. The vineyard area spans an enormous 1,400 hectares throughout the Ribera del Duero, Rueda and Cigales DO’s, with some of the vines aged at between 50 and 100 years old. The soils are a mixture of loam-clay-sand, as well as some limestone and silt. The winery at Bodegas Protos was designed in 2008 by Rogers Stirk Harbour and is an architectural delight – well worth a visit if you find yourself in Ribera del Duero!

Food matches: Perfect with red meat, venison stew, anchovies, dark chocolate, and strong cured cheese.
