A dark-blue coloured grape variety, Merlot originates from France and the name is thought to be a diminutive of Merle, the French name for blackbird. It is used for varietal wines and as a blending grape.
The Merlot grape is now cultivated in both old and new world vineyards and is an incredibly well-known grape variety, probably most famous for being the main grape variety on the Right Bank of Bordeaux in France. Pomerol and Saint Emilion are two of the most prestigious appellations in the world of wine.
