Description
The Unico 2014 is aged in 225-litre French and American oak barrels before a further ageing period in 22,000-litre wooden vats. First impressions on the nose are slightly more subdued in the 2014 vintage, but the palate is ample, rich, and luscious. A wine of great structure with a silky texture, wonderful concentration, and finesse. A pleasure to drink now but will age for decades.
Founded in 1864, 118 years before the Ribera del Duero region was demarcated, Vega Sicilia are and always have been the pace setters in the region. Taken over by the Alvarez family in 1982, they are without doubt Spain’s most famous winery. Their 250 hectares of vines are planted with Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec. The grapes harvested for Unico are aged for at least 10 years in oak and in bottle before release – one of the longest ageing periods in the world. If stored correctly in optimal conditions, this wine can be cellared for 40 – 60 years.
Food Pairing: Particularly good with grilled or roast lamb, as well as slow-cooked beef short ribs, oxtail and ox cheek.
