Description
From 50-year-old vines, the Protos ’27 2020 spends 16 months in new French oak and 12 months in bottle prior to its release. The wine is an intense cherry colour with vivid hues of violet. Elegant aromas of ripe black fruit, sweet spice and toasty notes rise from the glass – very expressive and complex. The palate is well-balanced with round tannins and a pleasant finish. A spectacularly easy drinking wine.
With a history dating back almost 100 years, the mission of Bodegas Protos has always been to listen to and understand the terroir. For the last 10 years, Protos has been studying every plot of land it owns, observing how Tempranillo clones adapt and change in each location to gain a deeper understanding of the vine, and ultimately craft the best expression of each terroir. The vineyard area spans an enormous 1,400 hectares throughout the Ribera del Duero, Rueda and Cigales DO’s, with some of the vines aged at between 50 and 100 years old. The soils are a mixture of loam-clay-sand, as well as some limestone and silt. The winery at Bodegas Protos was designed in 2008 by Rogers Stirk Harbour and is an architectural delight – well worth a visit if you find yourself in Ribera del Duero!
