66 % Chardonnay, 17 % Pinot Noir, 17 % Pinot Meunier
A smooth, round, charming champagne with generous, broad, ripe fruit on the nose and creamy, fine mousse. Citrus, flora, a touch of mango, yeast & honey. A wonderful finish with excellent length. A celebratory champagne if ever we saw one.
Born in 1662, Pierre Legras was already producing wine in Chouilly during Louis XIV’s reign, at a time when a young monk called Dom Pérignon was still studying theology.
Not yet the Cote des Blancs, Pierre would have known about white, grey and red still wines, witnessing the early rise of what was to become bubble-focused Champagne. Fast-forward ten generations and we find Vincent Legras at the helm of this family domain, one of the oldest in Champagne, with 7ha of the best plots in the Grand Cru area of Chouilly, just East of Epernay, that specialises in Chardonnay-only or -dominant cuvées.
Another Chouilly producer explained to us recently with some fanfare: ‘the Grandes Marques bought most of our production for their wines but we are – Enfin! – getting recognition in our own right’. How right he was. Cracking quality, more individuality and lower prices than many bigger houses. Special note must be made of the stunning, lingering acidity in all these wines.
