Muga always use the finest materials and are open to new techniques that provide greater quality without losing authenticity. To produce each of their wines, they opt for traditional procedures like natural fining. The only cellar in Spain with a master cooper and three in-house barrel-makers, Bodegas Muga owns 620 acres of vineyards but it also has control over 370 acres owned by vine growers in the area. The vineyards are located on the foot of the Montes Obarenses, within the area called Rioja Alta. The site climate is exceptional due to, on the one hand, the singular geography and orientation of the vines and on the other hand, the surrounding climates – Mediterranean, Atlantic and Continental climates are combined harmoniously thus creating a perfect climate for grape growing.
A medium-deep, dense garnet/black cherry colour. The nose is complex with ripe, red berry and black fruit coming to the fore with hints of black pepper and subtle, creamy, smoky oak, followed by notes of coffee and a touch of mint. The entry on the palate is smooth and elegant and develops with good volume towards an elegant, harmonious mid-palate revealing fresh, ripe red berry fruits and spice. The whole is underpinned by a powerful tannic structure and fresh acidity.
Food matches: This wine pairs well with red meats, lamb and charcoal-grilled rockfish.
