The head winemaker at La Rioja Alta S.A., Julio Saenz, declared this wine as a ‘Selección Especial’ – a title of the highest praise from winemakers, only awarded to wines and vintages that they rank among the best ever made. Ardanza has long been a wine trade favourite, offering unrivalled value for money for immediate drinking or cellaring. 2010 is only the fourth vintage of Ardanza to win the title in 77 years, alongside the legendary 1964, 1973, and 2001.
The wine is expressive, aromatic and exceptionally elegant, with traditional Rioja aromas of long ageing in oak barrels and gradual oxidation through the years in wood. The blend is 80% Tempranillo from the Rioja Alta subregion, and 20% Garnacha from Rioja Oriental, with the Garnacha being central to Ardanza’s aromatics, structure and concentration. The texture is enthralling with fine and silky tannins and excellent persistence. The palate is clean and sleek yet displays vibrancy, revealing notes of great complexity in perfect harmony; spice, smoke, dried cherry, cedar, treacle, vanilla and sandalwood. The finish is long and spicy.
