Description
The Château Montrose 2014 is an incredibly precise wine, dense and deep in colour with intense and complex aromas of ripe blackcurrant fruit with a slightly saline note. The palate is powerful with highly refined, velvety tannins, and a smooth mouthfeel with expressive flavours on the long and elegant finish. This vintage sets a benchmark for Château Montrose.
From Saint-Estèphe on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, Château Montrose is an institution. Famously known for having the most iconic barrel hall in Bordeaux, if not the world, the estate is a great second growth and was recently purchased and re-invigorated by the Bouygues family. Hervé Berland, who formerly worked at Mouton Rothschild, is now the main man and they are pumping serious dosh into the facilities. The 95-hectare vineyard is planted on a mix of gravel and sand atop a clay-rich subsoil. Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for the most plantings (60%), with Merlot (32%), Cabernet Franc (6%) and Petit Verdot (2%) the supporting acts. Château Montrose will no doubt continue to get better and better in the years to come.
