Description
Château Haut-Batailley, a Grand Cru Classé from the 1855 classification, is located at the southern boundary of the Pauillac appellation, near Saint-Julien. Its name reflects the historical ties to its neighbour, Château Batailley, before their separation in 1942. In 2017, it entered a new chapter under the stewardship of the Cazes family, known for their expertise with other prestigious estates like Château Lynch-Bages.
Since then, the estate has expanded and revitalised its vineyards, with planting efforts doubling the vineyard size to 41 hectares by 2021. The terroir consists of deep gravel soils, supporting Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, creating wines that embody Pauillac’s elegance and complexity. Sustainability is also key to its operations, with biodiversity initiatives, including planting over 900 trees and shrubs in 2022.
Château Haut-Batailley produces two wines: the flagship, known for its refined structure and ageing potential, and a second wine, Haut-Batailley Verso, celebrated for its accessible, fruit-forward character.
The 2016 vintage opens with aromas of ripe blackcurrants, black cherries, and subtle cedar, transitioning to a palate layered with fine-grained tannins, dark fruit, and a hint of graphite. Aged 16 months in oak barrels, of which 70% were new, this wine balances power and refinement, making it an excellent candidate for cellaring.
