Description
From vineyards at 850m elevation, the El Otero 2019 is from an officially declared ‘excellent’ vintage. The wine spends 16 months in oak barrels and is deep crimson with a garnet rim in appearance. The nose is intense and complex with aromas of ripe blackberry and blackcurrant, tobacco leaf, white pepper, nutmeg and liquorice, as well as cedar, coffee and forest floor coming through on the finish. The palate is full, smooth and elegant – the perfect food wine.
After extensive soil testing at the end of the 1980’s, the La Rioja Alta group branched into Ribera del Duero in the Anguix / La Horra area in Borgos. By 1993, the vineyard area had been defined, acquiring a number of old vines on the El Otero plot. It was not until 2000 that they officially released their first vintage, having sold off the first five for not meeting the desired quality and style. The Áster estate is situated at 700-800m altitude and is complete with a state-of-the-art winery that is powered by sustainable energy from their solar farm.
