Description
From vines grown on a single vineyard at the foothills of the Sierra de Cantabria, 630m above sea level, and planted on shallow, chalky soils, Altún Villacardiel spends 8 months ageing in barrel and is an absolute delight. Bright, cherry-red in colour, the nose is an expressive bouquet of red fruits and blackberries. Elegant on the palate with polished tannins and a fresh, vibrant finish that is characteristic of the vineyard.
Run by Iker and Alberto Martinez, two brothers and third generation winemakers, Altún is spread across 23 plots in Baños de Ebro, Laguardia, San Vicente and Elciego of the Rioja region, accounting for 120 acres in total. With the Cantabrian Mountains as a backdrop, the vineyards of Altún are truly stunning. The Martinez family have been working the land here since 1939 and today produce a range of wines that have adopted a Burgundian-style hierarchy system of offering Grand Cru, Premier Cru, and Village level wines.
