Argentine Virtual Wine Tasting – Caelum
Last night we had a fabulous tasting of the new wines we have imported from Bodega Caelum in Argentina.
With 14 screens on the call, we were particularly pleased to have Hernan Pimental with us, who was actually dialling in from Uruguay, who is one of the family owners of the vineyard.
Hernan talked us through how the winery was founded, the history behind the name and branding and also how the wines were made. Our members took advantage of his wisdom and a number of great questions were asked.
First up, we tasted their Caelum Malbec Gran Reserva 2013. A super wine with a deep red-ruby colour. It had a lovely fruity nose with aromas such as red fruits and ripe cherries. A very smooth and fresh wine that had good scores across the board from our tasters – averaging 8.48.
Next up was their Caelum Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva 2014. I was particularly looking forward to tasting this wine. Slightly darker in colour this time (which the label colour cleverly depicts), still with notes of cherry, but also darker fruit such as blackcurrant and blueberry. There is a lovely spice with this wine. This wine was again enjoyed by all and had a slightly lower average score of 8.4.
All in all, a very successful tasting – and we look forward to the Italian encounter in 2 weeks time.
We were slightly light on the entries for the Canape of the Week competition this week – however the winners were ‘El Kel’ and Ashley for their excellent cheese and charcuterie board. (A substantial upgrade from their pizza and chicken dipper set up in the early weeks of the tastings!)
Special mention must also go to Martin and Pam, who transported the wines to the Pyrenees and dialled in to the tasting!
