14th Tour du Vin – Rioja 2019
At the end of September, we took 18 members and guests to Spain for surprisingly our first ever tour to wine mecca – Rioja.
Our first tasting on the Wednesday afternoon was to Bodegas Roda in Haro. We were looked after superbly by Victor, who we had hosted a tasting in London with in 2018.
Day 2 saw the touring party enjoy 3 tastings. Firstly with the charming Miguel Merino at his vineyard Bodegas Miguel Merino. Followed by visits to the more famous Bodegas Muga and then after lunch to La Rioja Alta, where we were treated to tasting the Vina Ardanza 2010 that has just been released En Primeur in the UK.
Day 3 had probably the greatest tasting we have had in all of our 14 wine tours – our visit to Marques de Murrieta in Logroño was nothing short of spectacular. After a short tour of some of the estate, we sat down for a very memorable tasting. We worked our way through their fabulous selection of wines, with matching gastronomic pairings. Starting with Pazo de Barrantes Albarino 2018, then finally finishing with the Murrieta Gran Reserva 2012, then the fabled Castillo Ygay 2009.
Our last tasting on tour was in Navarra – where we visited Bodegas Ochoa. We were looked after by the delightful Adriana Ochoa, who is a 6th generation wine maker. A very lovely way to end our tour.
We had an entertaining final evening in Pamplona to end the tour – and we look forward to visiting Puglia and Galicia for the two tours in 2020. The planning starts now…
